Coleraine 1st XV are in action at Sandel Lodge this Saturday, when a large crowd is expected for the Bannsiders' first outing in this season's Kukri Qualifying Division One.

Portadown are the visitors and, despite suffering a heavy defeat to newly-promoted Donaghadee a fortnight ago, the boys from Chambers Park remain among the favourites to take the honours in this most competitive and entertaining of leagues.

Coleraine coach Richard Kernaghan and his players will be under no illusions that a disciplined and fully focused performance is essential this weekend, if the home team is to prevail.

Unfortunately, Neil Patterson will miss the entire season having sustained a serious injury to his knee and Steven Dickey will remain sidelined for several weeks.

But the arrival of some new faces and, in particular that of the highly regarded Steven Douglas, from Instonians, has led to a sense of cautious optimism among the Sandel Lodge faithful.

Last weekend's 55-3 victory at Ballynahinch should certainly have boosted confidence levels following a rather tame midweek performance at home to Ballymena, when 2 tries by impressive back-row forward Andy Hamilton earned the visitors a 12-0 win.
